06 · What you'll learn

  • Conceptualise a short motion piece: moodboard, storyboard, style frames

  • Prepare raster and vector assets in Photoshop and Illustrator for animation

  • Animate with the 12 principles, motion design, and kinetic type in After Effects

  • Build simple 3D assets, camera, and light in Blender and composite 2D+3D

  • Finish post: colour, sound design, export, and public project defence

Syllabus: module structure

The course is built on PBL (project-based learning): 120 hours — ten lectures, ten seminars and sixteen practicals, and across the whole semester each student runs one project of their own from moodboard to making-of. Ten topics lead from the role of graphics to the final render.

TopicContent
1–2the role of graphics; project organisation → moodboard and concept; pre-production: storyboard, style frames
3–42D graphics: raster and vector assets (Photoshop / Illustrator); foundations of animation: the 12 principles
5–6motion design: shapes and kinetic typography; VFX and advanced motion in After Effects
7–83D graphics and animation basics in Blender; compositing: masks, tracking, 2D+3D assembly
9–10post: colour, sound, final render; presentation, critique, making-of defence

Assessment and tools

Assessment is project-based: interim screenings at seminars, topic-by-topic practice, and a final defence in the making-of format — the student presents the project and breaks down how it was made, from concept through intermediate versions to render. Critique is part of the format: every screening includes a review of classmates’ work.

The tools are Photoshop and Illustrator for 2D assets, After Effects for motion and VFX, and Blender for 3D basics. Commercial alternatives covering motion design in Ukraine include Projector and KAPI; the academic module differs in ECTS credits, its PBL structure with critique, and its tie to film and video practice.

The course complements the editing module Foundations of Video Editing: the graphics and titles animated here become part of the edited sequence; and it shares with the Interactive Cinema and AI Methodologies course the same idea of disclosure on generative material.

Instructor

The instructor is Sasha Poberailo, a filmmaker and researcher of interactive cinema, lecturer at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture (more about the author).
