Bommer Brothers Film Club

BOMMER-FEST 2010 filled the Bommerъ hall for forty-eight hours and showed that Kharkiv had an audience for non-commercial cinema. The festival team did not want that audience to disperse after the closing ceremony, so in 2011 the Bommer Brothers film club began regular screenings in the same room at 6 Poltavskyi Shliakh.

The name kept the house’s own — the club was, in effect, the cinema’s resident community, organised by Oleksandr Poberailo with the same circle that ran the festival. The timing mattered: the club opened while the festival’s momentum was still fresh, so the first audiences were partly made of people who had just spent forty-eight hours in that hall.

The club’s principle was simple: world cinema is not consumed but studied. Each meeting was a screening followed by conversation — context, film language, and what the film does to its viewer. The hall of ninety seats made the format work: small enough for discussion to stay one conversation, not a lecture.

The club ran for more than two years of regular meetings, alongside the early underground film production of its organiser — the community half of a practice that also had a filmmaking half. Hosting the screenings meant preparing context for every title and leading the discussion afterwards — an educational routine that later flowed into the organiser’s teaching practice at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. For a young filmmaker, the club doubled as a film school with no tuition: the clearest way to learn how films work is to explain them to a room and survive its questions.

The programme drew on the history of world cinema rather than the current distribution repertoire: classics, auteur cinema, festival discoveries of the kind the 2010 festival had brought to the hall. A detailed meeting-by-meeting programme is preserved in the organiser’s archive and will be added to this page as it is digitised. Three lines ran through it: the canonical classics any film education is built on, auteur cinema of the kind festival circuits celebrated in the 2000s–2010s, and discoveries brought back from the 2010 festival’s international selection. What the programme deliberately avoided was the current commercial repertoire — the club existed precisely to give Kharkiv a second window onto world cinema.

For Kharkiv’s film community of the early 2010s, Bommer Brothers was the place where festival cinema became a habit rather than an event — the same hall, the same faces, every week. When the club ended, its organiser moved on to web series and, later, interactive cinema research; the club remains the community chapter of that story. In 2015 the web series Dirty Russian followed — the production half of the same practice, moving from the screening room to the internet. This site is the continuation of that line: the research, the courses, and the interactive projects documented here all grew from the conviction the club was built on — that cinema is worth studying together, in a room, with other people.
