Mission

  • Promote screen arts and non-commercial intellectual cinema.
  • Support the growth of independent filmmaking in Ukraine.
  • Give directors, actors, and producers — first-time authors included — a chance to show their work to a wide audience.
  • Build an environment for experience-sharing and professional ties between independent filmmakers.

About the festival

BOMMER International Film Festival began as an initiative to develop independent filmmaking in Ukraine and to revive the cultural role of the Bommerъ cinema — one of the oldest cinemas in Kharkiv and Eastern Europe. The first public announcement appeared in March 2010; by April the festival had grown into the venue’s largest cultural event of the year.

The programme brought together independent, auteur, documentary, animated, and experimental cinema from different countries, creating an open space in Kharkiv for young authors, professional conversation, and a meeting between the audience and non-commercial film.

Format and programme

The festival ran from 23 to 25 April 2010: the opening on 23 April at 18:00, the closing on 25 April at 16:00 — forty-eight hours of continuous screening. The event was part of the national project “Тиждень довіри” (Week of Trust) and took place in the context of Global Youth Service Day.

Feature, animated, documentary, and experimental films were all accepted. The festival deliberately set no runtime limit: the programme included both shorts and full-length works.

  • Competition programme — for films completed in 2009–2010.
  • Out-of-competition programme — for other selected works.

Scale

More than 100 films from 30 countries were selected. The competition covered 12 nominations — best feature, experimental, animated, and documentary film, plus an audience award.

The festival opened with Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera (1929) — a silent experimental documentary and a foundational work of world cinema avant-garde, screened in the city where much of its imagery was shot a century ago.

Among the announced international events: the world premiere of the French film Beyond, presented as a Cannes participant, and an American feature featuring Jim Parsons.

The Bommerъ cinema

The Bommerъ cinema was not just a venue but the cultural foundation of the festival. Its house at 6 Poltavskyi Shliakh traces back to the early twentieth century — the site is described in Kharkiv press as one of the oldest cinemas in the city and Eastern Europe, and in 2010 it positioned itself as a space for art-house and festival cinema, an alternative to commercial distribution.

At the time of the festival the hall seated 90, with a 4.2 × 8 m screen and Dolby Stereo sound — parameters published in the festival’s own announcement.

Archive and photos

The festival’s paper trail survives in press archives: the announcements on CineMova and News.kh.ua, a pre-festival feature on the world premiere, and the preserved VK community page — all linked below. Posters, programmes, and photographs from the organiser’s archive are being digitised and will be added to this page.

What came next: Bommer Brothers

The festival proved the venue could hold a community. In 2011 the Bommer Brothers film club started in the same hall — two years of weekly world-cinema screenings and discussion. The club’s page tells that story; the two together are the short history of Bommerъ as an art-house venue.
