Interactive Cinema: The Analysis Model in the Context of Audiovisual Format

Humanities Science Current Issues

InteractiveMethodologyTheory

Abstract

The aim of the article is to develop a model of analysis of interactive cinema that takes into account its specificity as an audiovisual work. The model evaluates: the story implementation mechanism; interaction mechanisms; the viewer experience; and the interrelations among interactive, audiovisual, and dramatic elements. This piece extends the methodological line of the Master’s thesis Interactive Cinema: History, Typology, Artistic Techniques (Kharkiv State Academy of Culture, 2024).

Model structure

The analysis model is built for interactive cinema as an audiovisual work, not as a game genre in disguise. It coordinates four layers: how the story is implemented; which interaction mechanisms are available; what the viewer experiences; and how interactive, audiovisual, and dramatic elements interrelate.

The framework continues the methodological line of the Master’s thesis Interactive Cinema: History, Typology, Artistic Techniques (Kharkiv State Academy of Culture, 2024), turning thesis criteria into a practical toolkit for art-studies analysis and for makers who need a shared vocabulary of form.

Conclusions

A workable model of interactive cinema must hold story, interaction, reception, and audiovisual-dramatic linkage in one analytical field. Separating these layers without reconnecting them produces either pure narratology or pure UX description. The proposed model is offered as a bridge between scholarly analysis and design practice.
